What Is Pinot Gris?

Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio is a white wine grape. This wine grape is well known around the   world. This pinkish wine grape is thought to be a mutation of Pinot Noir.  It’s bright, deceiving color and its mouthwatering flavor become popular worldwide.

Pinot Gris is known for zesty white wine grapes, it can also be used as rosé. This wine grape is best used to make wine juice that is best for the hot summer’s day. Every winemaker prefers this variety to create a masterpiece.

Characteristics Of Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris usually has gray/brown skin. Some varieties of this grape have violet and reddish skin. According to its name, grapes can have a brownish pink to black and white appearance. Lots of winemakers show their great affection to these grapes, and made a product that made Pinot Gris popular. 

Since Pinot Gris emerged, countries such as Italy, France, and New Zealand made different wine flavors and even looked different. Italian style Pinot Gris is known to be dry with brilliant acidity and notes of almonds. French produce oily with faint honey notes Pinot Gris. Full-bodied and fleshy, dry and seductively smooth Pinot Gris top in New Zealand. Despite its good outcome,it is high in sugar but low in acidity.

Pinot Gris’ Origin 

In the Middle Ages in Burgundy, where Pinot Gris first originated. By the 1300’s it arrived in Switzerland. In 1375, the brothers planted the vines on the slopes of Badacsony bordering Lake Balaton. In 1711 in Germany, it was rediscovered and called grauburgunder and ruländer. Pinot Gris thrives in cool climates.

Due to Large day and night temperature swings in Northern Italy, Pinot Gris thrives there. In good temperature and nurturing, it can bring us the product we want.  Now it is popular among connoisseurs because of its good wine that has become popular. It is reportedly a favorite of the emperor, Charles lV. In 1711 a German merchant discovered a wild grape growing in the fields of Palatinate. The wine produced by that wild grape is known as rulander and later the vine is discovered as Pinot Gris. 

Growing Regions Pinot Gris Around The World

In the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in northeastern Italy, where it is a popular planting. A plantlike Pinot Gris needs very good slopes to get its strong and healthy body. The popularity of it in Italy made a great impact in the whole wine world. Therefore, it is now planted in the most growing region in the world. We can commonly find Pinot Gris in Germany, Italy, France, and Austria.

Pinot Gris in Italy is known as Pinot Grigio. It was produced famously in Italy. In this place, it finds its purpose and becomes a boom. In the first imports in the 1970s in America, Pinot Gris rose and became popular in that particular country. Many countries export Pinot Gris, especially countries with cold climates. Through the help of wise wine makers, Pinot Gris is now planted in many countries. This vine is grown on roughly 15,000 hectares around the world.
