What Is Pinot Gris?

Pinot Gris’ Origin
In the Middle Ages in Burgundy, where Pinot Gris first originated. By the 1300’s it arrived in Switzerland. In 1375, the brothers planted the vines on the slopes of Badacsony bordering Lake Balaton. In 1711 in Germany, it was rediscovered and called grauburgunder and ruländer. Pinot Gris thrives in cool climates.

Now it is popular among connoisseurs because of its good wine that has become popular. It is reportedly a favorite of the emperor, Charles lV. In 1711 a German merchant discovered a wild grape growing in the fields of Palatinate. The wine produced by that wild grape is known as rulander and later the vine is discovered as Pinot Gris.
